Ballet Summer Course Audition Prep: Tips for a Successful Audition

Ballet Audition Tips

Auditioning for a ballet summer course is an exciting step in a dancer’s journey, and preparation is key to making a lasting impression. Whether you’re auditioning for a prestigious company or a smaller program, it’s important to come prepared and with the right mindset. Here’s a guide to help you prepare for your audition and set yourself up for success.

# 1. Know the Style of the Company You're Auditioning For

Different ballet companies and summer courses often focus on different styles of ballet, such as classical ballet or Balanchine technique. Research the company you're auditioning for and familiarize yourself with their style. For example, Balanchine-based companies often emphasize speed, precision, a straight back leg when prepping for pirouettes, while classical companies might focus more on traditional lines like a softer carriage of the hand and a double bent knee before pirouettes. Tailoring your audition to match the company’s style can give you an edge.

# 2. Wear a Comfortable, Non-Distracting Leotard

Your leotard should help you feel comfortable and confident while also allowing the judges to see your technique clearly. Choose a simple, well-fitting leotard in a color that works for you—black or a solid color is often a safe choice. Avoid flashy patterns or overly bright colors, as these can distract from your performance. Your leotard should fit snugly without being too tight or too loose. Always check with each individual company to adhere to their dress code.

# 3. Bring Extra Supplies

It’s always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared, especially when it comes to auditions. Pack extra pairs of tights, an extra leotard, and an extra pair of shoes (both pointe and flat shoes). Accidents happen, and having backups will ensure you’re not left scrambling if something goes wrong. Make sure your shoes are clean and in good condition—fresh broken-in pointe shoes and clean flats are essential for a polished appearance.

# 4. Hair Should Be Slicked Back Away from Your Face

A clean, professional look starts with your hair. Keep it slicked back and neatly secured in a bun so that it’s completely out of your face. This not only looks polished but also ensures you can focus on your movements without distractions. Avoid any loose hair or flyaways that could pull your attention away from your performance.

# 5. Smile and Stay Positive

Ballet auditions can be nerve-wracking, but one of the simplest things you can do to stand out is to smile and look like you’re enjoying the class. Ballet is as much about performance as it is about technique, and judges want to see dancers who enjoy what they’re doing. A positive attitude and a friendly demeanor can make a lasting impression. Remember, the way you carry yourself can be just as important as how you execute your steps.

# 6. Always Thank the Teacher and Pianist After Class

Politeness and gratitude go a long way in any audition setting. After the class, be sure to thank the teacher and the pianist for their time with a small curtsy and a "thank you". A small gesture of appreciation shows that you are respectful and professional, which are important qualities in any dancer. A kind word can leave a lasting impression even after the audition is over.

# 7. Confidence, Kindness, and Fun Are Key

The judges will be looking for your technique, but they will also be watching for your overall presence in the studio. Dancers who exude confidence, kindness, and a genuine passion for the art form are often the ones who stand out the most. Even if you make a small mistake or feel nervous, remember to keep your energy up, smile, and show that you’re enjoying the process. Confidence can make a huge difference, and a kind, enthusiastic attitude will set you apart from others.

# 8. Have Fun!

Lastly, remember to enjoy the experience. Auditions are not just about impressing others—they’re about growing as an artist and exploring new opportunities. While it’s natural to feel nervous, try to embrace the moment and trust in your preparation. The more you focus on having fun, the more you’ll enjoy the process, and the more the judges will see your authentic passion and talent.

---

Ballet auditions can be a great learning experience, whether or not you land the spot you hope for. Preparing in advance, staying calm, and bringing your best attitude to the room will give you the best chance to shine. Good luck—and above all, remember to have fun!
